Offshore wind supply chain advances in Germany, Australia and the UK
· Energy · Germany · Australia
Three offshore wind developments moved forward. Nexans began manufacturing 525 kV high-voltage direct current subsea cables for Germany's LanWin2 offshore grid connection. Australia's VicGrid selected ACCIONA as development partner for the 2 GW Gippsland offshore wind transmission project. Separately in the UK, ScottishPower Renewables completed what it called a record-breaking cable landfall operation for its 960 MW East Anglia Two project. Cable and transmission work is often the bottleneck for offshore wind, so the milestones signal progress on building out the grid links these projects need.
Why it matters:Grid and cable capacity increasingly determine whether offshore wind projects get built on schedule.
Key points
- LanWin2 is a German offshore grid connection; Nexans is making its 525 kV HVDC cables.
- VicGrid picked ACCIONA for the Gippsland transmission project.
