Mercedes-AMG unveils first in-house electric SUV, the GT SUV

· Automotive & EV · Germany · United States

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the GT SUV, the first full-size SUV the performance division has developed entirely in-house rather than deriving from a mainstream Mercedes model. The five-seat electric performance SUV shares its underpinnings with the fully electric GT 4-Door Coupe and will come in GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63 guises, the top version producing up to 1,153 hp from three axial-flux motors in some reports, with DC fast charging at up to 710 kW. It is positioned squarely against the Porsche Cayenne Electric and, on paper, may outdo it. The 2028 model year vehicle arrives at US dealerships next summer, making it AMG's first ground-up electric crossover and a test of whether the brand's performance image carries into the electric era.

Why it matters:AMG's first clean-sheet EV shows whether legacy performance sub-brands can command premium pricing against newer electric rivals, a question facing every European performance marque.

Key points

  • Three variants planned: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63
  • Shares platform with the fully electric GT 4-Door Coupe
