Schneider moves eastern intermodal business to Norfolk Southern, raises outlook
· Logistics · United States
Schneider National is shifting all of its eastern intermodal business from CSX to Norfolk Southern, a major realignment of its rail partnerships. The company said the partnership is meant to unlock growth, add capacity flexibility and move more freight off the roads and onto rail. The announcement came alongside Schneider's slightly worse-than-expected third-quarter report, after which it nonetheless raised its outlook. The switch moves a sizeable intermodal customer between the two eastern Class I railroads and reinforces truckload carriers' push to convert highway volumes into rail moves.
Why it matters:A large intermodal customer changing rail partners reshuffles volumes between eastern railroads and signals truckload carriers' intent to push more freight onto trains.
