Nuclear supply chain deals advance SMR fuel and components

· Energy · United States · South Korea

Two supply-chain agreements gave a lift to small modular reactor development. NuScale Power signed a contract with South Korea's Doosan Enerbility to manufacture the upper reactor coolant system for the NuScale Power Module, moving a key long-lead component into fabrication. Separately, Antares Nuclear reached a commercial procurement deal with BWXT covering an initial tonne of TRISO fuel for its microreactors, with volumes that could increase as deployment requirements evolve to support its advanced reactor programme. Together the deals show advanced reactor developers locking in manufacturing and fuel supply before commercial deployment, a step that determines project timelines and costs. Both technologies depend on specialised supply chains that are still being scaled.

Why it matters:Advanced reactor projects succeed or fail on whether they can secure specialised components and fuel at scale, so these supply deals are an early test of whether SMR timelines are realistic.

Key points

  • Doosan Enerbility will make the upper reactor coolant system for the NuScale Power Module
  • Antares will procure an initial tonne of TRISO fuel from BWXT
  • Both deals are intended to scale as deployment requirements grow
