Tesla Q3 Profit Falls 43% as AI and Robot Costs Climb
· Tech · United States
Tesla reported third-quarter net income of $1.7 billion on $28.0 billion in revenue, with revenue flat and profit down 43% from a year earlier. Operating income fell 56% year over year as spending on AI, research and development, Optimus robots and autonomous driving climbed, and the once-booming energy storage business also shrank. On the earnings call, management set a target of 2027 to begin delivering Optimus robots to customers and said owners could add their vehicles to the robotaxi fleet next year.
Why it matters:Tesla is trading near-term margins for AI and robotics bets, a test of whether automakers can fund autonomy ambitions without eroding core profitability.
