Tesla Q3 2026: margins rebound, profit still falls
· Automotive & EV · United States
Tesla reported third-quarter 2026 results after the market close, with margins rebounding but profit still lower. In its shareholder letter, the company said battery availability, not demand, remained the limiting factor on auto volumes, and that it ended the quarter with its largest backlog for passenger vehicles while prices kept falling. Energy generation and storage revenue fell 16% year-over-year to $2.88 billion even as deployments rose 10% to 13.7 GWh, which Tesla partly blamed on tariff-related customer refunds. Active Full Self-Driving subscriptions reached 1.74 million, up 67% year-over-year, though the metric counts upfront purchases as well as monthly subscriptions. Tesla also pushed unsupervised FSD in customer-owned cars to the second quarter of 2027, and said it will sell the steering-wheel-free Cybercab to consumers by the end of this year.
Why it matters:Tesla's numbers set the tone for EV pricing, battery supply and robotaxi timelines industry-wide, and the gap between FSD subscription growth and delayed unsupervised driving shows how much of its valuation rests on promises still to be delivered.
