MOL Group Opens First Biomethane Plant in Hungary
· Lubricants & Chemicals · Hungary
MOL Group has inaugurated its first biomethane plant in Szarvas, Hungary, after investing more than HUF 2.7 billion (USD 8.3 million), the company said on October 14. The facility can upgrade biogas to a purity suitable for injection into Hungary's national natural gas network, replacing more than 7 million cubic metres of natural gas annually. The plant represents MOL's entry into biomethane production and supports the region's push toward renewable gases. Biomethane is chemically similar to natural gas and can be used as a transport fuel or chemical feedstock, making it relevant to lubricant and chemical producers looking at lower-carbon raw materials. The investment also aligns with EU renewable energy targets and the broader effort to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors.
Why it matters:Biomethane offers a drop-in renewable substitute for natural gas, and MOL's first plant signals how oil majors are building lower-carbon feedstock positions that will shape chemical and fuel supply chains.
Key points
- Investment exceeded HUF 2.7 billion (USD 8.3 million).
