India Publishes Draft BS-VII Emission Norms for Commercial Vehicles

· Lubricants & Chemicals · India

India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has published draft Bharat Stage VII (BS-VII) emission rules for commercial vehicles in the Gazette of India. Under the two draft notices, light goods vehicles would be covered from April 1, 2030, while buses and trucks would follow from April 1, 2031. The proposal marks a significant tightening of Indian emissions standards and sets a clear timeline for the shift. The rules cover commercial vehicles only, which account for a large share of the country's diesel consumption. Lubricant and additive suppliers will need to reformulate engine oils to match the new performance requirements, which typically demand lower ash, better oxidation stability and compatibility with advanced aftertreatment systems. The extended timelines give the industry several years of lead time, but the regulatory direction is now locked in.

Why it matters:Tighter Indian emission rules will pull lubricant and additive formulations toward lower-ash, higher-performance products across a huge commercial vehicle fleet, shaping supplier R&D and product portfolios for the next decade.
