Roche signs $1B-plus RNAi obesity deal with China's Rona Therapeutics
· Health · Switzerland · China
Roche has licensed an RNA interference obesity drug from China's Rona Therapeutics in a deal worth up to about $1 billion, its seventh China pact this year. Roche will pay up to $100 million in upfront and near-term milestone payments to license the asset, which targets ALK7 inhibition, a field drawing heavy interest for its potential to lower visceral fat. The alliance extends an especially active stretch for Roche in China and makes it the latest large drugmaker to bet on RNAi-based obesity medicines. It adds to a rapidly growing set of obesity assets beyond GLP-1 drugs that companies are racing to secure.
Why it matters:Large drugmakers are competing to lock up next-generation obesity treatments, and China's biotech sector is increasingly the source of those assets, shifting where early-stage innovation is found.
