GlobalFoundries Unveils 7nm-Class FDX Fusion Node
· Tech · United States
GlobalFoundries unveiled its 7nm-class FDX Fusion node, returning to advanced FD-SOI development seven years after abandoning FinFET. Production is planned for 2028. The move revives the company's push in fully depleted silicon-on-insulator technology, a niche it had concentrated on after exiting leading-edge FinFET competition. The new node could offer chip designers an alternative path for low-power, radio-frequency and embedded applications where FD-SOI has advantages, at a time when demand for differentiated process options is growing alongside AI and edge computing.
Why it matters:GlobalFoundries returning to advanced FD-SOI gives chip designers a differentiated process option at 7nm-class, testing whether FD-SOI can win designs in low-power and edge markets.
