· Shipping · China · Malaysia
Chinese shipyards are racking up a series of significant newbuilding orders. China's shipowners and carmakers, including Cosco Shipping Specialized Carriers, BYD and SAIC Anji Logistics, plan to jointly invest around $2.5 billion to build 21 11,000-ceu car-carriers in domestic yards, as exports rise. Separately, Singapore-listed Yangzijiang Maritime Development has signed for four firm 82,000 dwt kamsarmax bulkers at Jiangsu Watts Energy & Engineering, with options for two more. And Malaysia's MISC is preparing five more LNG carrier newbuildings in China after securing a fresh 20-year charter award from Petronas for five LNG carriers. The orders span car carriers, dry bulk and LNG, illustrating the breadth of China's shipbuilding demand.
Why it matters:These orders underscore China's dominant and expanding position in global shipbuilding across multiple vessel types, tightening competition for Korean and Japanese yards and signaling confidence in long-term demand for car carriers, bulkers and LNG tonnage.
