Toyota Tsusho and KIS Group form Indonesia biomethane joint venture

· Lubricants & Chemicals · Indonesia · Japan

Toyota Tsusho Corporation and the Indonesian arm of KIS Group have set up a joint venture to produce and sell biomethane in Indonesia, KIS Group said in a press release. The venture, PT KIS Toyota Tsusho Biomethane Indonesia (KTBI), was established in September 2026, with commercial operations targeted for 2027. Biomethane is produced from organic waste and can substitute for conventional natural gas in fuel and industrial applications. The partnership pairs a Japanese trading house with an Indonesian producer, positioning the venture in the country's emerging renewable gas sector. Commercial output is still more than a year away, but the venture signals continued corporate investment in alternatives to fossil gas in Southeast Asia.

Why it matters:A trading house and local producer building biomethane capacity in Indonesia reflects the widening push to commercialise renewable gas as a substitute for fossil gas in fuels and industry.
