China NEV Retail Falls 12% in September; GM China NEV Share Tops 60%
· Automotive & EV · China · France
Preliminary CPCA data shows China's September NEV retail sales fell 12% year on year, with a surge in the final three days of the month narrowing the decline from 20% in the first 27 days. In a separate read on the same market, GM China reported third-quarter sales topping 358,000 vehicles, with new-energy vehicles accounting for more than 60% of that total. And in France, September passenger car data showed BYD surging, with Chinese brands reaching an 8.1% share of the market. The figures point to a Chinese market whose headline growth has stalled even as electrified models take an ever-larger share of sales, and to Chinese brands extending their reach into Europe at a pace visible in national registration data.
Why it matters:China is the world's largest EV market, so a year-on-year decline there resets volume expectations for global automakers even as Chinese brands push into Europe.
