France's largest battery storage facility goes online
· Energy · France
TagEnergy has inaugurated a 240 MW/480 MWh battery energy storage facility in northeastern France, the country's largest operational BESS. The project is based on Tesla Megapacks and provides grid-balancing services. It is jointly owned by TagEnergy and Banque des Territoires. The two-hour duration system is designed to help balance France's grid as nuclear and renewable output fluctuates, supporting frequency regulation and shifting energy across the day. The inauguration marks a step up in scale for French storage, which has lagged some European peers, and adds to the growing pipeline of utility-scale batteries being built to firm up low-carbon generation.
Why it matters:It marks a scale-up of grid-scale storage in a nuclear-heavy market, showing how batteries are being deployed to balance low-carbon generation and adding momentum to Europe's storage buildout.
