German ministers vow tough response as Frankfurt protests turn violent

· Politics · Germany

German ministers threatened tough penalties for rioters who smashed storefronts, looted shops and injured more than 100 police officers in Frankfurt overnight, after largely peaceful cost-of-living protests across Germany turned violent. Thousands had joined orderly demonstrations earlier on Saturday in cities including Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg. Frankfurt police reported petrol bombs, rocks and bottles thrown at emergency services and arrested 54 people aged between 13 and 29, while water cannons were used against youths hurling Molotov cocktails. The protests were organised by a youth initiative whose name roughly translates as "Gen Z has got this".

Why it matters:The violence tests how European governments handle a new wave of youth-led cost-of-living unrest.
