Wallenius Wilhelmsen orders up to 12 LNG dual-fuel car carriers
· Shipping · Norway · China
Wallenius Wilhelmsen has ordered four LNG dual-fuel Pure Car and Truck Carriers from China's Jinling Shipyard and secured options for eight additional vessels, in a fleet expansion potentially valued at $1.5 billion. Each Shaper Class vessel will have capacity for 9,900 car equivalent units, and delivery of the four firm ships is scheduled to begin in mid-2030. The options cover the additional units. The order expands the company's fleet renewal program at a time when the car-carrier segment is under pressure over fuel transition and U.S. port fee proposals for foreign-built vessels.
Why it matters:Continued ordering of dual-fuel car carriers signals that large operators are committing to LNG as a transition fuel despite regulatory uncertainty, locking in yard slots and shaping future capacity on vehicle trade routes.
