Maersk, APM Sign Concession for New Tanger Med 3 Terminal
· Shipping · Morocco · Denmark
Maersk and terminal arm APM have signed a concession agreement to develop a new container terminal at Tanger Med 3 in Morocco. Morocco's Royal Cabinet announced the agreement after a working session chaired by King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Rabat, which reviewed the development of the project. Tanger Med is a major transshipment gateway between Europe, Africa and the Atlantic, and the third phase would add capacity at a time when carriers are repositioning networks around Mediterranean hubs. For Maersk, the concession deepens vertical integration between its liner business and terminal operations, and gives it a stake in a facility positioned to handle growing north-south and east-west flows.
Why it matters:Terminal concessions at Mediterranean hubs are a key battleground for carrier vertical integration and for control of transshipment capacity between Europe, Africa and the Atlantic.
