Google to Run Its TPUs on Oracle Cloud in First Hyperscale Deal
· Tech · United States
Google and Oracle announced a partnership that will make Google's tensor processing units available to Oracle cloud customers, the first time the AI chips would be offered on a hyperscale cloud platform outside of Google's own. Oracle said in a statement Tuesday that the TPUs will be available by a date it specified. The arrangement gives enterprises a non-Google route to TPU capacity while letting Oracle broaden its AI infrastructure menu against rivals such as AWS and Microsoft Azure. It also marks a step in Google's effort to position TPUs as an alternative to Nvidia's dominant GPUs in the merchant AI chip market.
Why it matters:Opening TPUs to a rival hyperscaler tests whether Google's silicon can become a genuine merchant alternative to Nvidia and loosens the cloud market's chip lock-in.
