Debt markets mobilise to finance AI infrastructure boom
· Finance · United States
Wall Street is tapping global credit markets to finance artificial intelligence infrastructure. QTS, a data-center operator backed by Blackstone, is seeking about $800 million through a private placement of debt. Pimco bought a $4 billion slice of a large SpaceX financing deal tied to expanding its AI ambitions, according to people familiar with the matter. Meta is seeking to raise a total of $95 billion through stock-related deals stretching into early next year, with Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom potentially buying Meta shares as part of a $35 billion stock offering. At the same time, Elon Musk warned that more than 200 neoclouds face what he called "guppy-level death," and investors are questioning the debt-fueled expansion of such AI computing providers.
Why it matters:Private credit and equity issuance are becoming the backbone of the AI build-out, so how this debt performs will shape both the technology sector and credit markets.
