Volkswagen launches Xpeng-built ID. UNYX 09 and Jetta M6 EV in China

· Automotive & EV · China · Germany

Volkswagen has moved to defend its shrinking position in China with two new electric sedans aimed at different price tiers, both developed for the local market. Volkswagen Anhui launched the ID. UNYX 09, built with technology partner Xpeng, at a limited-time starting price of 169,900 yuan (about $25,290) — roughly $27,000. Separately, the Jetta M6 electric sedan has hit the market, giving the 35-year-old Jetta nameplate a battery-electric model, with nearly 290 miles of CLTC-rated range for under $12,000. Volkswagen is launching both through its Chinese joint-venture network, which also builds its ID. series EVs locally. The launches come as foreign brands lose share to domestic Chinese EV makers that have moved faster on software and price. The ID. UNYX 09 is aimed squarely at China's competitive mid-size electric sedan segment, while the low-priced Jetta M6 targets budget buyers.

Why it matters:Foreign automakers are increasingly relying on Chinese partners and local platforms to compete on price and software, and Volkswagen's dual launch shows how far it will go to defend its largest market.
