Posiva wins world's first licence to operate a used nuclear fuel repository

· Climate · Finland

Finnish radioactive waste management company Posiva has been granted a licence to operate its encapsulation and final disposal facility for used nuclear fuel at Olkiluoto. It is the first repository for used fuel anywhere in the world to receive such an operating licence. The facility is designed to encapsulate spent fuel and place it deep underground for permanent disposal, a step that closes the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle. The decision matters well beyond Finland: countries expanding nuclear generation, including those pursuing small modular reactors, need a credible answer for waste, and a licensed deep geological repository provides a working reference. Posiva is owned by Finnish nuclear operators and has developed the project over years of regulatory review.

Why it matters:A licensed deep geological repository proves the waste problem is solvable in practice, strengthening the case for nuclear expansion worldwide.

Key points

  • The facility is located at Olkiluoto and handles encapsulation and final disposal
  • It is described as the world's first licensed used-fuel repository
