Nvidia asks memory suppliers to use TSMC 3nm process

· Tech · United States · Taiwan

Nvidia has asked suppliers of its next-generation custom high-bandwidth memory chip to standardize manufacturing on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co's 3-nanometer process, according to the Seoul Economic Daily. The request went to Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron, the three main memory makers. Custom HBM sits close to AI accelerators and is a key determinant of performance and power use in AI systems. Directing suppliers toward TSMC's 3nm node would pull more of the memory supply chain into the foundry's advanced process, tightening ties between the two sides of the AI chip stack. The report did not detail volumes or timing, and none of the companies named commented on the request.

Why it matters:If suppliers comply, Nvidia's memory roadmap becomes entangled with TSMC's leading-edge capacity, shifting how power and performance are divided along the AI chip supply chain.

Key points

  • The request went to Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron.
  • It concerns Nvidia's next-generation custom high-bandwidth memory chip.
  • The Seoul Economic Daily reported the plan; the companies did not comment.
