Gilead's oral colitis drug tops Entyvio in mid-stage trial
· Health · United States
Gilead Sciences reported Phase 2 dose-finding results showing its oral α4β7 inhibitor produced stronger remission rates in ulcerative colitis than rival products, including Entyvio, and eliminated symptoms for patients with a type of inflammatory bowel disease. On the strength of the data, the company plans to start late-stage trials of the pill next year. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease, and the market has been led by injected biologics such as Entyvio. An effective oral option would offer patients an easier route of administration and intensify competition in the immunology and gastroenterology space.
Why it matters:A pill that outperforms leading injectable biologics would shift treatment standards in inflammatory bowel disease and challenge established immunology franchises.
Key points
- The drug is an oral α4β7 inhibitor.
