Anthropic commits at least 5% of shares to public benefit fund
· Tech · United States
Anthropic announced the creation of an Anthropic Public Benefit Fund that will receive at least 5% of the company's shares, with the potential for an additional 2% on top of that initial commitment. The fund is structured as a charitable LLC whose sole asset will be Anthropic stock, and it is meant to support public-benefit causes including addressing the employment impact of AI. Separately, the company said it has begun embedding outside AI evaluators inside the company so they can assess and publish reports on its safety practices and risks. Those evaluators will use company computers and office space and have access to internal tools and systems, and they can publish findings without Anthropic's approval.
Why it matters:Committing founder equity to a charitable vehicle and granting outside watchdogs employee-like access are governance experiments other AI labs may be pressed to copy as scrutiny of safety and labor impact intensifies.
Key points
- The fund may receive an additional 2% of shares beyond the initial 5%.
- The charitable LLC's sole asset is Anthropic stock.
- Outside evaluators can publish findings without the company's approval.
