Battery Storage Buildout Accelerates With Major Projects and Contracts
· Climate · Germany · United States
Several large battery storage developments were announced. Vattenfall awarded Fluence Energy a contract to supply and support a 1GWh battery storage facility at the Brunsbüttel site in Germany. In Texas, Nightpeak Energy completed the 150MW Bocanova 2 facility, raising total capacity at the Bocanova site to 300MW. Canary Media reported that a new class of batteries is helping data centers work with the grid, offering a cheaper alternative to the fossil-gas turbines tech giants are building at gigawatt scale for AI facilities. Separately, Arevon Energy finalised three 20-year indexed Renewable Energy Credit agreements for its 200MWac Panther solar project in Illinois.
Why it matters:Storage is becoming the linchpin of grid reliability as renewables and data-center demand surge, and these projects show utilities and developers committing capital at gigawatt scale.
