UK Blames Iran's IRGC for RAF Fairford Airbase Incident
· Security · United Kingdom · Iran
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham told parliament that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was "almost certainly" behind a suspected terror plot at RAF Fairford, a British airbase used by the US, saying the incident was "highly likely" coordinated in Iran. The government summoned Iran's ambassador, who denied involvement and said Tehran was willing to assist the investigation, and imposed further sanctions on two Iranian nationals. The scare led to the withdrawal of US Air Force B-1 heavy bombers. The UK also said the incidents at Fairford and RAF Molesworth were likely coordinated by Iran. Separately, NATO's top commander warned that any Russian attack on alliance territory would prove "utterly futile," amid heightened Europe-Russia tensions.
Why it matters:The attribution raises the risk of direct confrontation between Western powers and Iran, deepening Middle East and European security tensions.
