India locks down Delhi, detains thousands to halt election-chief protest
· Politics · India
Indian police detained more than 2,000 protesters and the founder of the satirical 'Cockroach' youth movement, Abhijeet Dipke, as thousands of security personnel locked down central New Delhi to stop a rally demanding the resignation of the election chief. Authorities suspended mobile internet, closed metro stations and shut markets. The protesters want election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to quit over alleged irregularities in the voter list, from which more than 130 million names have been struck since 2025. Police said they acted to prevent disruption; the movement, led by Generation Z activists, is not registered as a political party.
Why it matters:The crackdown on a Gen Z-led movement over voter-roll changes tests India's democratic institutions and could shape coming state elections.
