Poland, Netherlands advance AP1000 nuclear plans
· Climate · Poland · Netherlands
Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe has commissioned Westinghouse to begin ordering long-lead components for the first unit of Poland's planned first nuclear power plant, which will comprise three AP1000 reactors. Separately, South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Construction has been contracted by Westinghouse to carry out basic design studies for two large nuclear plants in the Netherlands based on the AP1000 design. Both moves push forward Europe's effort to expand nuclear capacity, with Poland moving from planning to procurement and the Netherlands advancing toward front-end engineering design.
Why it matters:Europe is betting on US-designed large reactors to restore nuclear capacity; procurement and design contracts are the earliest signals of which vendors and suppliers will win a decade of construction work.
Key points
- Poland's first plant is planned to have three AP1000 reactors.
