Constellation, Google and Amazon sign nuclear power deals

· Energy · United States

Constellation Energy has signed 20-year power purchase agreements with Google and Amazon over the past week, supporting close to 1.1 GW of nuclear capacity expansions in the PJM Interconnection region. The Google deal covers 890 MW of new nuclear capacity on the PJM grid along with a power purchase agreement. Together the agreements back nearly 1.1 GW of nuclear expansion. The deals underscore surging demand from data centers and large technology companies for firm, carbon-free power in a grid region already facing capacity constraints. Companies involved are Constellation Energy, Google and Amazon, all major players in the U.S. electricity and technology sectors. Meanwhile, Oracle is subscribing to output from the Point Beach nuclear plant. The long-term contracts give nuclear operators revenue certainty to justify investments in uprates and life extensions.

Why it matters:Tech companies' growing power demand is reshaping how nuclear plants are financed and contracted, a trend that could lock in long-term clean firm capacity across deregulated U.S. markets.
